AUG 02 3.00 p.m The Miracle of Bern
(German title: Das Wunder von Bern)Director: Sönke Wortmann, colour, 117 min., 2003
In 1954, nine years after Germany had lost WW II a man is coming home to his family from Russia, where he had suffered as a prisoner of war for many years. The man has difficulty coming to terms with his family and his former work in a coal mine in the industrial core area of Germany (“Ruhrpott”). He does not like the fact that his wife and daughter are operating a bar to earn the families living. His younger son Matthias admires the local football player Helmut Rahn who is becoming a member of the German team for the World Championship in Bern (Switzerland). At the end of a dramatic tournament Germany surprisingly wins the final. It is a very German film describing the situation when Germany was recovering from the lost war and starting to become a leading industrial nation again.

AUG 02 5.30 p.m The Voyager
(German title: Homo Faber)
Director: Volker Schlöndorff, colour, 109 min., 1991
The famous German filmmaker Schlöndorff adapted the story from the novel “Homo Faber” written by the Swiss novelist Max Frisch in 1957.
The film tells the fictional story of the 50 year old engineer Walter Faber, played by Sam Shepard - a man portrayed as devoted to saving the world through development of massive dams. Set in 1960, the film begins with Faber surviving a plane crash in Mexico. Through a series of coincidences, Faber then meets a woman in her early twenties, played by Julie Delpy. This person strongly reminds him of his former girl-friend in Germany (before WW II) and he begrudgingly acknowledges the attraction. The film beautifully illustrates their travels across Europe (France, Italy, and Greece) together. Well regarded by critics and telling a coherent and unusual story, The Voyager has an explosive theme - revealed only in the ironic twist ending.

AUG 03 3.00 p.m Lumber Kings
(German title: Die Könige der Nutzholzgewinnung)
Director: Matthias Keilich, colour, 94 min., 2004
The likable good-for-nothing Krischan comes back to the village he hails from after 12 years. There he finds his old friends and former colleagues in a desperate situation of unemployment. They all had been lumberjacks before the reunification of Germany but lost their jobs due to the restructuring of the forest service. Krischan suggests to organise a lumberjack competition in order to attract tourists and earn some money. After a series of technical difficulties and personal problems his idea becomes a success. The film nicely reflects the present situation of huge parts of former Eastern Germany (“German Democratic Republic”) where many jobs got lost after the reunification in 1990. It also gives a good impression of forests and forest work in a German mountain area.

AUG 02 5.30 p.m Jacob the Liar
(German title: Jakob der Lügner)
Executing Producer: Robin Williams, colour, 116 min., 2004
The story in based on a book of the German author Jurek Becker. Location is a Jewish ghetto in Poland during WW II. The German occupants torment the Jewish people. Jacob occasionally hears some radio news about the progress of the Russian troops fighting aganst Hitler´s army. He tells a friend about this. The news is immediately spread and creates hope for a soon liberation. To keep optimism alive in the desperate situation of the people around him Jacob creates new good stories. Finally the Germans hear about such news and want to find out who illegally owns a radio.

Its very heartening to note, that in a world driven by sheer materialism and brute pace, people still take out a few hours to appreciate arts and artists. The IGNFA Movie Club, has through several months and weekends of screenings, realised that people really do love movies. They love sitting in a big theater, watching the lights go down and letting the fullness of the experience envelope them. Comfortable seats, a huge screen and great sound all thrill them.

It's really fascinating that a few people, or thousands of people can pool their efforts together to make something that others can enjoy. They take them all the way from the present and make them forget about everything else, letting them know that there is life beyond what meets the eye, and enjoy the breadth of movies out here.

IGNFA Movie Club is proud to have been involved in an activity which makes people happy, inspired, curious about life and interested in the same . In the journey which started last year from June onwards, we immersed and forgot ourselves in showing visual poetry to an audience getting slowly swayed by the originality and innovation displayed.

In the process, we forgot that we have completed an invisible milestone of screening 100 movies in 10 months. The pride and happiness is immense. Our faith in the power of arts and movies is reaffirmed.

CHAK DE IGNFA

The IGNFA sports contingent leaves Dehradun to participate in the Annual All-India Forest Sports Meet held at Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Realising the powerful impact a movie could have on human psyche, two inspirational movies in the sports genre were screened on 29th January 2008. And we screamed Chak De IGNFA through these two signature movies centered around team building and sportsmanship - Chak De India and Jump In.

The Devil's General (Des Teufels General)

Director: Helmut Käutner, b/w, 115 min., 1955

Helmut Käutner's film is an adaptation of a play by Carl Zuckmayer, who based his character of Harras, a general in the Luftwaffe, on a real-life pilot, the aviation pioneer Ernst Udet. In a vintage performance by Curd Jürgens, General Harras is portrayed as a stubborn, power-driven officer, vain, irreverent to the point of recklessness and a womanizer. During the course of WW2 in 1941, and following certain key experiences, he increasingly develops an inner distance from Hitler's regime. He is arrested, then released on the condition that he root out the saboteurs responsible for a series of fighter plane crashes. Harras refuses to denounce the perpetrators, instead plunging to his death in a plane that has been tampered with.

Waller's Last Trip (Wallers letzter Gang)

Director: Christian Wagner, colour, 100 min., 1988

Waller, an old track inspector, reminisces on his life, as he walks his section of track for the last time. "His" railway line in an idyllic valley in Allgäu is to be closed. Waller sets off on his last inspection tour without saying a word. His life has been closely associated with the history of this railway line. As his steps measure the rails and sleepers, the memories of the past come back to him, and his walk along the line becomes a walk back through the years.
Waller sees scenes from his childhood in the twenties, then of his first job as a track inspector. In his memory he once again says goodbye to his best friend, who went to war in 1941 and never came back again. Two years later Waller has to go to the front himself, because he helped Angelika, daughter of a manufacturer, to illegally move some flour. After the war Waller falls in love with Angelika, but her father will never agree to the marriage.
The fascination of this walk lies in the dreamy narrative method used by the young director, who alternates effortlessly and powerfully between the present (in colour) and the past (in black and white) of this man.

M – A City in Search for a Murderer (M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder)

Director: Fritz Lang, b/w, 98 min., 1931

A child-murderer threatens the serene life in Berlin and alarms the population. The crooks are hindered in their profitable dealings by the police investigations. Therefore parallel to the law and order maintaining forces the organized criminal underworld goes in search of the pathologic murderer. And in fact, the crooks manage to capture him, putting him before an underworld court, which sentences him to death. However, before the murderer is executed, the police appears and arrests him "in the name of law". - The revolutionary montage, which is still unrivalled today, is characterized by the consistent separation of sight and sound. Lang primarily concentrates on dialogues and dramatically necessary sounds (the whistled Grieg tune) which propel the action forwards or indirectly continue the story.

The Ninth Day (Der neunte Tag)

Director: Volker Schlöndorff, colour, 97 min., 2004

In February 1942, the Luxembourgian priest Henri Kremer was granted nine days’ leave from the concentration camp where he was imprisoned. The Gestapo officer Gebhardt confronted him with a life-or-death decision: Kremer was asked to betray his own convictions by persuading his national church to collaborate with the National Socialists. If he failed to do so, not only he, but also his family and his imprisoned co-brethren would be facing imminent death. For nine days, on each of which he had brilliant rhetorical and intellectual duels with the Gestapo officer, Kremer grappled with this insoluble moral conflict that defied notions of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. The resultant film, built around extracts from the priest Jean Bernard’s diary, is a vivid and stirring specimen of polished dialogue and excellent acting that examines the eternal issue of individual responsibility.

AUTUMN FILM FESTIVAL NOV 8-11, 2007

The good response to the Monsoon fim festival, August 2007 would tempt any human being to plan sequels to similiar festivities. That's how the idea of organising regular film festivals cropped up, associating them with something very much regular. And what's more regular than the seasons - monsoon, autumn, winter and a spring film festival!

The present film festival concentrates on serious meaningful movies, which have won rave reviews. There is no specific theme but there are several invisible common threads running through the movies - human relationships especially father-son, human struggles and painful journeys through time.

Nadiya ke Paar is an exceptional movie. It can be categorised as one of the great classics of Hindi Cinema. It revolves around a love story between two young persons divided by a river. The story is short and simple. Uttar Pradesh’s village culture and dialect is depicted with joy and maturity. Hum aapke hain Kaun is a gawdy remake of this great movie.

Cinderella Man (2005)

Cast: Russell Crowe, Renée Zellweger
Runtime: 144 mins
This is an extraordinary movie exemplifying one man's extraordinary fight to save the family he loved. Cinderella Man is an American Academy Award-nominated drama film titled after the nickname and inspired by the real life story of former Heavyweight boxing champion, James J. Braddock.

Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974)
Director: Manoj Kumar
Cast: Manoj Kumar, Zeenat Aman, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Moushmi Chatterjee
Runtime: 150 mins
This movie has some of the greatest actors of Indian cinema; portraying a lot of social and political issues, which even after 33 years haven't changed much. Some of the characters have to go down as one of the greatest portrayals ever, in one of Manoj Kumar's best films. The film focuses on problems of unemployment.

Babam Ve Oglum (2005)

Cast: Çetin Tekindor, Fikret Kuskan, Hümeyra, Serif Sezer
Runtime: 108 mins
It is an exotic Turkish movie tailor-made for genuine cinema lovers. Sadik, a rebellious youth is a politically active university student who becomes a left-wing journalist in the 70's, despite his father's expectations of him becoming an agricultural engineer and taking control of their family farm in an Aegean village. When a merciless military coup hits the country, they go through a series of events after which, Sadik returns to his village with his young son, knowing very well that it will be hard to correct things with his father. A rare masterpiece.

Gandhi My Father (2007)

Runtime: 112 mins
Mahatma Gandhi could transform the soul of a nation but could not save the soul of his own son. This is a true story of one of the most revered father figures in contemporary history and his failed relationship with his own son. The freedom movement aptly forms a sepia-tinted backdrop to the family tussle and the film deftly sheds light on the darker side of Gandhigiri. It is a film of performances and duly showcases Akshaye Khanna's acting skills as never before. A worthy companion piece to Attenborough’s Oscar classic.

It won 3 Oscars. Another 40 wins & 61 nominations

Morning Raga (2005)

Morning Raga is one of the most innovative and fresh films to come out of India in recent years . The film revolves around three main characters whose lives have each been shattered by tragic events of the past and how they are united by circumstance. Slowly they begin to work together and blend their passions to bring back the happiness they once had. These three are all connected by a love of music, and through this the film explores elements of classical Indian music, the raga, and combines it with contemporary rhythms to create the most unique and mesmerizing beats and echoing vocals.

The Namesake (2007)

This movie is India's official entry to the 80th academy awards for the year of 2008 in the foreign film category.Based upon the novel The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, it is the story of the Ganguli family whose move from Calcutta to New York evokes a lifelong balancing act to meld to a new world without forgetting the old. Though parents Ashoke and Ashima (Irrfan Khan, Tabu) long for the family and culture that enveloped them in India, they take great pride in the opportunities their sacrifices have afforded their children. Jhumpa Lahiri, the author of the novel The Namesake, appears in the film as Aunt Jhumpa.

JURY'S COMMENTS

Non-humour Category

1. Call of the Wild by Bhaskar JV - A good attempt to combine still with motion Pictures as well as background music were nice. However, there was a need to edit some out of focus areas in the movie.

2. Stars on Earth by Pramod PP - At the first instance it looked like the borrowed concept but a neat and well made movie. The techniques (uniformity in zooming in and out of shots), selection of pictures and the flow are so captivating that it diverts the attention of the viewers from the fact that the movie is made out of still shots. FIRST

3. You are beautiful by Abhay Bhaskar - Another good attempt with only still pictures, even though the special effect of zooming in-out was missing but idea employed was good. The background music and the pictures were complementing each other. THIRD

4. Humsafar by Irfan - A good database of the batch which was nicely made. The group photos in between break the monotony of the movie. Also the background music is good. However, the comments on the individuals may make the neutral viewers guessing. SECOND

5. Decoration Committee a Night Before by Vivek Acharya - No editing was done on the raw footage but because of the commentary during filming the product got more life. Some parts were worth qualifying for the humour category. Second half of the movie was almost in darkness, could have been edited unless they are really required for the theme (like in a horror or a suspense movie)

6. Encounter with a Kanha Tiger by Ashok Kumar - Too short to call it a film. There were unwanted frames within this short short film which could have been edited.

7. Dhamtari model – by Raju Agasimani - A near professional production which was nicely edited. Good documentation of most of the aspects of the Dhamtari model but the background song at the end was not matching. FIRST

Humour Category

1. Hungary Call by Bhaskar JV – Good effort and the characters were acting naturally. However, humour was not remarkable. Also camera movement was very fast.

2. Barking Politicians Always Bite by Rajaram Singh - Theme chosen was good and the effort made by the character was appreciable. However, camera could have been more steady for a better result. SECOND

3. Tour Ke Mazedar Funde by Raju Agasimani – There is a professional touch in the movie. Picturization along with audio contributed to humour, but this was unnecessarily stretched at certain places. This could have been edited to make it crisp. FIRST

4. Thiru Gana Samba and Dummmm! by Ashok Kumar - theme is not clear. Even visuals were not clear. Moreover this should not be in the humour category.

5. The Great Absconders by Vivek Acharya – Commentary made by the film maker was brilliant. However, clarity in the shots was missing at times.

6. Reflex by Bhaskar JV – Good attempt. Flow of the movie was smooth and was nicely made but title could have been hilarious. THIRD

7. Masti Time Foresters by Zigme Tenzin - Lighter moments are shown but lack of visual clarity at times.

8. Behind the Scenes by Devaprasad - Lighter moments are shown but without any flow or message.

9. Enchanting F Block.. Wow by Kenei – Good effort made, at times artificiality was reflected but casting was superb.
